How to apply to foster

Thinking about fostering? Here’s what the process looks like—and how we’ll support you every step of the way.

Step 1: Start Your Journey

  • Join an Information Event: Attend one of our online You Can Foster information events to learn more and hear first-hand experiences from one of our amazing foster carers.
  • Speak to Our Team: Got questions? We’re happy to chat about fostering and help you decide if it’s right for you. Get in contact today.
  • Submit Your Initial Expression of Interest: If fostering feels like the right fit, we’ll invite you to share a few initial details.
  • Initial Home Visit: One of our friendly recruitment team will visit your home for an informal chat. This is a great chance to ask questions and learn more about what fostering involves.
  • Registration of Interest: If you’d like to go ahead, you’ll complete a Registration of Interest, your formal application to become a foster carer.

Stage One (Up to 2 Months)

Once we receive your formal application, Stage One begins. During this stage we’ll:

  • Complete all necessary checks and references (including medical and DBS/criminal background checks)
  • Invite you to take part in our free three-day preparation course, which gives a brilliant introduction to fostering
  • Allocate your own Supervising Social Worker who will guide and support you through the process

Stage Two (Up to 2 Months)

If we all agree you’re ready to continue, we’ll move on to Stage Two:

  • Your Supervising Social Worker will complete a detailed assessment of your suitability to foster
  • Once finished, your application will be presented to the Fostering Panel, who will make a recommendation
  • A final decision is then made by the Agency Decision Maker, and you’ll receive written confirmation of the outcome
